Maintaining your hardwood floors is the first step towards protecting your investment and keeping your floors looking beautiful.

We specialize in bringing tired out hardwood floors back to life. It is almost always cheaper to refinish hardwood floors rather than replace them. But once we have revitalized hardwoods and given them their original shine, we always instruct homeowners to take the best care possible in order to maintain the look and feel of their floors. Below are some of the easiest ways you can maintain your hardwood floors.

Avoid Excess Moisture

Wood reacts to excess moisture and water over time by cupping, cracking, and rotting. Some of the ways you can decrease the effects of excess moisture are to keep the humidity in the house at between 30-50%, and maintain a fairly steady temperature (which you’re likely already doing).

Also, clean up any spills, or mess from wet shoes on a rainy, or snowy, day and don’t allow liquid to sit on the floor surface. Especially if the seal has worn down, the moisture can get into the grains of the wood and cause a myriad of problems. Cleaning up right away is one of the most basic ways to care for your floors.

Clean With a Proper Hardwood Floor Cleaner

Using a water soaked mop to clean hardwoods? Not a great idea. Continuing on from the previous point, excess water build up in floors is a bad time. When you’re cleaning hardwoods, use a product that is specifically made to maintain wood floors. There are plenty of options for finding good
floor cleaning products that are not super expensive and get the job done.

Also, if you’ve considered using vinegar to clean hardwoods, steer clear and use a different solution. Anything acidic like vinegar or citrus can wear down the finish of the wood floors quicker and properly made solution.

Vacuum Regularly

Dust and dirt build up in the crevices of your floors can begin to damage and wear down the surface of the hardwoods. Removing as much dirt and dust as possible, as often as possible, will help maintain the look and feel of the floors and will keep the dust in the air to a minimum.

If you want to be extra careful, use a vacuum with a soft bristle roller so there is no chance of scratching dust around the surface. Once you’re done vacuuming, it is generally a good idea to do a once over with a floor cleaner to remove any dust that may have gone flying around the room during the process.

Buff and Reseal Before You Need to Refinish

You can keep the shine of your floors alive by buffing and resealing or staining them more often. Floors need to be refinished when the surface has worn down and the protective sealer is no longer as thick and strong as it used to be. If you buff the floor and restrain it before it needs to be sanded, then you’ll save the extra time and money that sanding requires, and you will maintain the look and stability of your floors surface for longer.
